DIY 3D WITCH WALL ART
Updated: 14 hours ago
Adding a classic witch to my 3D Halloween wall art series felt like the perfect next piece. I went with a more custom approach and made several of the details from scratch, but you can simplify the project by using ready-made pieces or skipping some of the extra details. I love how she turned out, and the gold moon and stars were the perfect finishing touch.
what you’ll need
Paint
Paint Brushes
Frame or Backing (i used my existing frame and a 1/8" MDF backing to insert into frame)
Styrofoam Head (and a piece of cardboard to reinforce the back)
Mod Podge
Tissue Paper
Water
Mixing Bowl
*Witch Hat
Black Kid's Wig
Black Fabric
Polyester Filling
Branches / Sticks
Rope / Twine
Clear Elastics
Gold Paper
Glue Dots
Crazy Glue
Hot Glue Gun
Glue Stick
Scissors
X-acto Knife
*Note: I made the witch’s hat from scratch, but you can use a smaller, ready-made hat that fits your model instead. Cut it in half before attaching it. See Step 3 for details on making your own.
a few tips before you start
✦ Use a small, ready-made witch’s hat to simplify the project.
✦ Lay out the witch, hat, broom, moon, and stars on the backing before gluing anything down.
✦ Use temporary glue dots to attach the moon and stars, so you can reposition them until you’re happy with the placement.

THE PROCESS ↓
STEP 1: PAINTING THE BACKING
Choose a backing or frame and paint it your desired background colour. I went with green for the witch. Let dry and paint a second coat.
STEP 2 - CREATE THE WITCH'S FACE
I got a Styrofoam head from the dollar store and cut it in half, keeping the side facing the direction I wanted the witch to look. I mixed equal parts Mod Podge and water, then used the mixture to brush layers of tissue paper onto the face. I set it aside to dry completely. In the meantime, I began on the witch's hat. Once it was dry, I painted the face green and the lips dark red.
STEP 3 - CREATE WITCH'S HAT
I used half of a black plastic cone for the top of the hat and covered it with fabric. Then I shaped wire into a rim and covered it with black lace. If you’re using a ready-made witch hat, cut it in half and set it aside to attach in Step 9.
STEP 4 - MAKE THE BROOM
I gathered several longer, thicker branches to make the handle and secured them with clear elastics at the top and bottom. For the bristles, I gathered smaller twigs and secured them at the top with another clear elastic. Then I tied the bristle bundle to the handle bundle with twine.
STEP 5 - ADD THE WIG
I used hot glue to attach the black wig to the Styrofoam head.
STEP 6 - ATTACH THE HEAD TO THE BACKING
I used Crazy Glue to attach a piece of cardboard to the back of the witch’s head. This gave the hot glue a sturdier surface to hold onto when I attached the head to the MDF backing.
STEP 7 - CREATE WITCH'S BODY
I used a child’s black Halloween cape for the witch’s dress. I shaped it to create the body and added Poly-Fil to give it dimension. I used hot glue to secure the fabric to the MDF backing and attach it around the neck of the Styrofoam head. Then I added a small skull choker as a finishing detail.
STEP 8 - ADD FRAME
Before continuing with adding the hat and broom, I placed the MDF backing into my black frame.
STEP 9 - GLUE ON HAT & BROOM
I used hot glue to attach my custom hat and broom to the MDF backing.
STEP 10 - ADD MOON AND STARS
I cut the moon and gold stars with my Cricut and added them to the backing with temporary glue dots to finish the piece. You can also cut them by hand or use pre-cut decorations.
