DIY 3D GHOST WALL ART

I wanted to do something a little different with the Halloween art in our living room this year, so I started thinking about 3D pieces. A floating ghost was the first thing that came to mind, and then it turned into an idea for a whole wall of Halloween characters. This was the first one I made. It was pretty simple to put together, and I love how the spiders finished it off.

what you’ll need

Paint

Paint Brushes

Frame or Backing (i used my existing frame and a 1/8" MDF backing to insert into frame)

Cheesecloth

Jar Or Container (to support the balloon)

Toilet Paper Rolls (to shape ghost arms)

Balloon

Black Felt

Spiders

Mod Podge

Water

Mixing Bowl

Hot Glue Gun

Glue Stick

Scissors

a few tips before you start

✦ Make sure the balloon and supports are stable before draping the cheesecloth.

✦ Layer the cheesecloth with some gaps and uneven edges to give the ghost a light, floaty look.

✦ Let the cheesecloth dry completely before popping the balloon so the ghost keeps its shape.

THE PROCESS ↓

Choose a backing or frame and paint it your desired background colour. I went with pink. Let dry and paint a second coat. In the meantime start working on the ghost.

Inflate a balloon and rest it on a sturdy jar or vase. Choose a support that’s about as tall as you want your ghost to be. I placed a box under my vase to make it taller, then attached a toilet paper roll to each side to create the arms.

Mix Mod Podge and water in a bowl until it’s thin enough to spread over the cheesecloth. I used equal parts of each.

I cut my large piece of cheesecloth into smaller pieces, then dipped them into the mixture and draped them over the balloon and supports. Add a few layers, letting the edges hang unevenly to create the ghost shape.

Leave the cheesecloth to dry completely so it holds its shape. I let mine dry overnight. Once it’s dry, pop the balloon and carefully remove it.

Cut two eyes from black felt and glue them onto the ghost.

Using hot glue, I attached the ghost to my painted MDF backing and then placed it inside the black frame. I glued a few spiders onto the ghost and frame for the finishing touch.
